The Challenge
Solar Panels Don’t Protect Your Roof. They Sit on Top of It.
Utah County has seen explosive solar adoption over the past decade — and now, the first wave of those roofs installed 10–20 years ago is reaching end of life. The problem: solar companies remove panels, but most don’t re-roof. Roofing companies re-roof, but most should not handle panels with live electrical connections.
Rhino Roofing and Exteriors bridges that gap. We coordinate solar removal with a qualified electrical professional, complete the full roof replacement underneath, and manage the panel reinstallation — all as a single project, with a single point of contact, on a timeline that minimizes how long your system is offline.
Attempting to re-roof around solar panels is not a valid approach. Panels must come off for deck inspection, ice-and-water shield placement, and full-slope installation. Any contractor who tells you otherwise is cutting shortcuts that can create roofing and solar warranty issues.

The Solar Removal Process
Assessment Through Reinstall — A Single Coordinated Project
Our Process
How It Works
- 01
Roof & Solar System Assessment
We inspect both the roof and the solar mounting system simultaneously. Roof condition is assessed for replacement scope. The panel array layout, mounting hardware, and wiring runs are documented for reinstallation reference. We coordinate with your solar installer for electrical de-energization planning.
- 02
Safe Disconnect & Panel Removal
A qualified electrical professional de-energizes the system at the inverter and safely disconnects the array before panels are physically removed. Panel condition is documented and photographed. Hardware is labeled for reinstallation. Panels are stored on-site in a protected staging area.
- 03
Full Roof Replacement
With panels off, we proceed with the complete roof replacement: tear-off, deck inspection and repair, ice-and-water shield, underlayment, and new roofing material installation — the same process as any full replacement, with penetration locations documented for solar re-mount hardware.
- 04
Solar System Reinstallation & Reconnect
Mounting hardware is reinstalled at documented penetration points and sealed per manufacturer spec on the new roof surface. Panels are remounted, wiring is reconnected, and the system is re-energized by the electrical professional. Final documentation is provided for warranty records.
Our Work
Utah County Homes With Solar — Our Recent Work
As solar adoption in Utah County continues to grow, the need for qualified solar-roofing coordination has grown with it. Rhino Roofing and Exteriors has completed solar removal and reinstallation projects across Pleasant Grove, Lehi, Lindon, and the broader Utah Valley. Every project follows the same process: document before, protect during, verify after.

Electrical Coordination
The Part Most Roofers Shouldn’t Improvise
Solar panels are live electrical systems. De-energization requires a qualified electrical professional; it is not something a roofing crew should improvise around. Rhino Roofing coordinates electrical support for solar removal projects.
We coordinate electrical disconnect and reconnect work as part of the solar removal scope. This service is coordinated as part of your roofing project — you deal with one point of contact (Rhino Roofing and Exteriors) and we manage the electrical coordination timeline.

Don’t Wait
Every Year You Wait, the Damage Under Those Panels Gets Worse.
Solar panel mounting hardware creates penetrations in your roof deck. When the underlying roofing system fails, moisture intrusion at those penetration points is often the first place it appears — and because the panels are covering it, you won’t see it until the damage has spread into the deck and potentially the attic structure. A failing roof under an active solar system is a compounding liability.
If your roof is approaching 15–20 years and you have solar, the time to plan the coordinated removal and re-roof is before you have an active leak, not after. The project is more controlled, less urgent, and easier to schedule on your timeline rather than an emergency timeline.

Common Questions
Solar Removal FAQs
- Can you re-roof around my solar panels without removing them?
- No. Roofing around panels can leave unchecked deck damage and compromised underlayment directly under your solar investment, and it can create warranty issues. Panels should come off for deck inspection, ice-and-water shield placement, and full-slope installation.
- Who handles the electrical disconnect for solar panel removal?
- We coordinate with a qualified electrical professional for solar disconnect and reconnect work. Solar panels are live electrical systems, so de-energization is not something a roofing crew should improvise. Coordination is included in your quote so you stay on one timeline with one point of contact.
- Will my solar warranty be affected by a roof replacement?
- It depends on your solar warranty terms. Many solar manufacturers require panels to be removed and reinstalled by qualified professionals. Penetrations on the new roof are sealed per the roofing system manufacturer's spec, and we document the work for warranty records.
- How long will my solar system be offline during a roof replacement?
- Typically the system is offline for the duration of the roof replacement — usually one to three days depending on roof complexity. We schedule the project to minimize offline time and coordinate the electrical partner's schedule to align with our roofing timeline so you are not waiting unnecessarily between phases.
- What does a coordinated solar removal + re-roof project cost?
- The total cost depends on your roof size, material selection, panel count, and whether any deck repair is needed. We provide a written estimate covering the full scope — roofing and electrical coordination — so you have a single project cost rather than separate contractor invoices. Call us for a free estimate.
